Default can empathy be learned?

Hi,

To cut a VERY long story short, my relationship is on the verge of ending. My partner is extremely empathic and can read anyone and react accordingly. He is manic depressive and insists that he needs me to be able to 'read' him as it makes him feel closer to me and secure in the relationship - whilst I understand that he needs this from me (as it is something I enjoy from him) it doesnt come naturally for me. At the moment it seems that we are on the opposite ends of the 'empathy spectrum' (and have been for our whole rollercoaster relationship of 7 years)
Is it possible to learn how to be more empathic? If so, how? Is there anything I could do, or read (ive tried a few books which suggest him talking about his feelings or writing them down etc but that defeats the object and doesnt work)
Would councelling help? Does anyone have any advice please?

Thank you xxx
