Hi
My brother was diagnosed with aspergers many years ago now. He is now 34 years old and last week he attempted to commit suicide as he found his aspergers was getting out of hand.
He used to live in Hull where he was stalked and bullied as a result of his AS. I have schizophrenia myself and I suggested to my brother that he may like to come and live near me in Stratford. He did this, but found town-life unsuitable for himself. He needs things going on around him that he can join in all the time.
One of his latest obsessions has been aquafit at the local swimming pool. He does this on a daily basis and sometimes twice a day. He is the only man in the group. The ladies don't like the fact that there is a man in the group, so he is worried that he will be banned from going. He has done nothing wrong, but last week the swimming pool manager wanted to speak to him the following day.
That was the day he tried to take his own life. He took 10 paracetomol tablets and spent the night in hospital. He is threatening to do it again and take more so that he finishes himself off. This, as you can imagine, really worries us.
The swimming pool is not his only problem. He has been obsessed with his local college too and has passed his GCSE Maths and English this last term. He wanted to go on to a higher course in music.
As well as his aspergers, he is also registered blind. He has some vision and makes the most of the sight he has, but the lecturers at college have rejected his application due to his sight problems. He is upset about this. He is a talented guitarist and wants to use it as his occupation. The college lecturers considered something completely different, but my brother isn't happy about it.
And finally, but not least is his Church. A few months ago he was involved with the wrong people. He got into a bad group of people and when he told his Church about it, they kicked him out of the Church music group. As I said, he loves his music and wants to play in Church, but the Church are very hipocritical. Like my mum said to them on the phone, "Let him/her who is without sin cast the first stone", but the Church is not any good.
Another friend of ours used to attend that same Church. His son has Downs Syndrome and the Church treated him terribly. Due to this the whole family moved to another Church where, it is hoped, they are being treated much better.
My brother has now gone up to Yorkshire to live with my parents for a short while. I am trying to investigate other places my brother can go. He would be suitable for a large town/small city. I think that a more middle class community would be more suitable. Better still, a community for people with aspergers syndrome would be excellent. If anyone knows of any such community or if you have any suggestions, please let us know.
